1 Plot summary
There is a Festival of Summer in Omelas,an utopian city, and all of the citizens prepare to welcome it. Omelas,is a beautiful city.The happines in Omelas seems deceive.Look perfect outside but actually bad inside because it has a secret behind all the happiness. The deceive happiness (something rather stupid) and the circumstances of the citizens in Omelas City where there’s no rules,but they happy.They enjoyed their lives because they could did all they want to did.
On the other hand,there was a child about ten years old,alone in the dark room in a basement under one of the beautiful public buildings of Omelas who feeble-minded,imbecible through fear,malnutrition,neglect,fumbles vaguely with its toes or genitals. His buttocks and thighs are a mass of festered sores.He was naked.No calves to its legs and belly protrudes.
However, his miserable and pain became the happiness of the citizen in Omelas.For an unclearly reason,all the Omelas perfection is based on the child and people (in Omelas) who saw and knew what happened with the child but coldn’t did anything to helped him,would weeped and raged then left the Omelas,to the place where the ones who walk away from Omelas.
2 Character sketch
A child,nearly ten,unclearly boy or girl.It is feeble-minded.Perhaps it was born defective,or perhaps it has become imbecible through fear,malnutririon,and neglect.It picks its nose and occasionally fumbles vaguely with its toes or genitals,as it sits hunched in the corner.The child has no understanding of time or interval.Sometimes it speaks,”I will be good”.It is so thin there are no calves to its legs,belly protrudes.Its buttocks and thighs are a mass of festered sores.It so miserable and pain,seems no live.
3 Theme analysis
This story is a critics for our society where there are many people be happy above others people’s suffering,include children abuse,human traficking or childrens worker.People can do anything to reach what they want but sometimes they forget the morality and responsibility as a human.
MY COMMENT
The vocabularies in this story are difficult to understand and enough complicated but I like this story,even in the beginning,I didn’t understand.It can add my vocabularies.I like about beautiful place,but I don’t like the fact behind all the happiness,its so irony.
