Easter Wings

BY GEORGE HERBERT
Lord, who createdst man in wealth and store,
Though foolishly he lost the same,
            Decaying more and more,
                  Till he became
                        Most poore:
                        With thee
                  O let me rise
            As larks, harmoniously,
And sing this day thy victories:
Then shall the fall further the flight in me.

My tender age in sorrow did beginne
And still with sicknesses and shame.
            Thou didst so punish sinne,
                  That I became
                        Most thinne.
                        With thee
                  Let me combine,
            And feel thy victorie:
For, if I imp my wing on thine,
Affliction shall advance the flight in me.

The Present from Jesus in Easter

Analyzing Herbert’s ‘Easter Wings’ telling about Easter, helps me to more realize and understand about   the goodness of Jesus’ resurrection and the unity with Him behind Easter moment that symbolized as wings. It reveals on the many aspects of this poem such as, title, theme, structure, prosody, dramatic situation, diction, imagery and figures of speech, and the tone. Therefore, this beautiful poem reveals the beauty of Jesus’ sacrifice at the cross and His resurrection.
The title in this poem conceives me about what the substance the author will bring to the reader. Though it just has two words, ‘easter’ and ‘wings’, it has an extremely deep meaning. First is easter that means as liberating. As many Christians know, at the Old Testament, easter refers to the freedom of Israel from Egypt while at the New Testament, it refers to the resurrection of Jesus. Therefore, the meaning of easter is about liberation, resurrection, freedom bringing joy and happiness to man from condemnation of sin. Furthermore, it also tells about a new hope and healing. Next is about wings which relate to bird that learn to fly and rise higher. So, the word ‘wings’ used by the author, perhaps to gives clues about man that fall into sin but can arise and fly like a bird with the wings that Lord has given to us because of His love. In conclusion, ‘Easter Wings’ telling about the goodness of Jesus’ resurrection and the unity with Him that set us free, so that we can arise from sin, united and fly with Him.
Then, the theme of this poem is about a man who is united with God’s resurrection as a meaning of Easter itself. As I explain my analysis on the 2nd paragraph before, I interpret this poem as a reflection and a give thanks expression of the author as a human that so loved by his creator. On the first stanza, it tells about man who falls into sin, he lost all the goodness that Jesus has given to him because of his sin. In the deep depression (…the fall further flight in me), he still sing which in my opinion refers to his perspective in general condition.  Whereas, on the 2nd stanzas shows the first perspective as a human which becomes his reflection of his religious experience when he falls into sin and then arise and united with God’s resurrection. Moreover, it has drawn clearly on the title. Therefore, I am so interested in this beautiful and meaningful poem.
Next aspect is the structure of this poem which is divided into three parts, such as lines and stanzas, shape, grammar, and repetition. First, it has two stanzas in this poem which each has ten lines. So, there are twenty lines in this poem. The stanzas and lines make a form like wings if we turn the poem paper to the left or to the right showing the connection with the title and the main idea of this poem. Besides, if I watch carefully, the form also like stairs symbolizing about the situation in human’s life when fall and then rise. However, it still easy to understand though the grammar is old style language such as ‘thou’, ‘thee’, ‘createdst, etc. Last, there are many repetition on this poem that makes it becomes beautiful. For example, at the 3rd line on the first stanza, the word ‘more’ is repeated twice to show that the author more and more weak (… decaying more and more). Besides, there are many words repeated twice, such as ‘most’( line 5 and 15) show the lowest degree of man’s existence (… most poor …most thin), ‘with Thee’(line 6 and 16) show the moment when man united with his Creator, ‘let me’(line 7 and 17) show as a prayer (… with thee O let me rise…with thee let me combine), ‘shall’(line 10 and 20) to emphasize a probability (… shall the fall further… affliction shall advance…)and ‘the flight’( line 10 and 20) as a result of the unity with God’s resurrection. In conclusion, this poem has a unique structure that makes it more interesting.
After that, the prosody in this poem divided into two parts, there are the rhyme and sound effects which makes it beautiful. The rhyme in this poem is various such as, true and end rhyme (store, more, same, became, thee, harmoniously, me, begin, sin, thee, victory, me, combine, thine). Besides, it also has internal rhyme (in, begin, man, and, shall, fall) forming the beauty of ‘Easter-Wings’. Then, the sound of this poem seems like someone who is praying with a slow and calm music which reminds me about the Psalm of King David. In brief, the beauty of this poem also applied by Herbert on the rhyme and sound of this poem.
Moreover, the beauty of this poem also located in the dramatic situation where the speaker prays and seems beg to the Lord to save him from the darkness of his life (… with thee O let me rise, let me combine). Firstly, he praises his Creator (1st stanza), then, he reflects to himself that he really needs God and want to be saved and united by Him, so that he can rise by the wings of God (2nd stanza). Moreover, the wings that he gets from God’s sacrifice as a picture of a bird who needs other birds wings to imp into his injured wings, so that he can fly again. It means, Jesus must die to put His ‘wings’ to us, so we, who was lost because of sin, can ‘fly’ into Heavenly Father’s presence without guilty and condemnation. In short, the dramatic situation of this poem is when the author combines with thee, imp his wing on thine, and advance the flight (2nd stanza).
Furthermore, the diction of this poem is understandable though it uses some English old-style words and many semantic words. For example, for English old style there are thy, thou, thee, thine whereas for semantic words there are tender age, fall further, the flight, imp my wing, let me rise, let me combine, etc. Thus, this poem was written by a old religious author, so it is full with old style and semantic words which make it as a craft of that age.
Then, the figure of speech of this poem using simile to compare human’s fall into sin with the stairs and the resurrection as wings (based on the form of how this poem is written). Besides, the author also compares Jesus’ sacrifice as the killed bird whose wings are given to other bird that still alive. So, like I’ve explained above that this poem full of semantic word and meaning that I can’t understand one by one.
The last is the tone of this poem where the speaker seems in the quiet place is praying alone and singing a psalm for Creator’s goodness while reflecting his live on Easter Day. Then, the speaker realizes how good is his God whose death save him from the darkness and make him arise together with His resurrection. While thinking about this amazing grace, the speaker reflects the depth of the sin he had passed or made him fall. In addition, I guess that the speaker is a man as a picture of Adam, the first man in the Bible, who lost because of his sin and became poor though at the first, he got everything (wealth and store)from God (1st stanza). The reason I guess that because the author of this poem is a man (George Herbert). However, this poem also intend for man in generally including women.  Therefore, the tone of this poem is calm, soft, slow showing the situation in a prayer room, church, or confession room with songs like in the Psalm.
Although many things in this poem still confusing me, I still excited during analyze this poem because the beauty of this poem reminds me about the goodness of Jesus’ sacrifice and resurrection. I also had the same experience with the author or the speaker where I had felt fall too deep into darkness but I still can see His wings lift me up and make me rise. So, it has strengthened me to rise higher than before with His wings. It likes religious experience that I believe will bring new hope into those whose hearts touched by Him to understand the amazing grace behind His resurrection.
Therefore, the aspects in this poem bring me to understand the meaning of Easter as a present from God to His children. The present is ‘the wings’ to help us rise and fly to the presence of Heavenly Father. Besides, it also draws the unity between God and His child. Last, I thank God for reminding me about His love by this poem.

Long Walk to Forever (The Confusion of Catharine’s Heart)

I never thought that I would meet Newt a week before my wedding day. He had been my neighbor since my childhood. Suddenly, he came to my house and knocked the door while I was reading magazine to choose my wedding dress. Therefore, I was shocked and surprised because I knew he joined in the army and he left the camp without permission or usually called ‘A.W.O.L’. So, he really made me worried for he had to get strict sanctions in prison. On the other hand, I felt happy, really happy for actually I loved him but I never showed him or talked about love for he was too shy and as a woman, I couldn’t begin. Actually, we were close friend and maybe too close and I lost him since he joined in the army. Then, Henry Stewart Chasens, my fiancé, came and filled my emptiness during Newt left me. Henry was good enough for me, so that I received the engagement. However, it seemed too long for me, too long for waiting Newt. Unexpectedly, Newt asked me to walk with him but I reject it because as a woman who had been engaged it wasn’t good if people saw me walked with other man except my fiancé or my family. Finally, I couldn’t hard reject his request because I was missing him too as he missed me and I know that I missed the moment where we were together, the comfortable when I was beside him.

Huffst… I felt my heart beat fast during our trip and I could not hinder my feeling, my love, my happiness, and all that he made in my heart at that time. Finally, he confessed to me that he loved me! He also loved me! But… How could I express it? It wasn’t right, I had been engaged! I had a (good) fiancé! Aaaargh… I tried to hinder my feelings from Newt, I shook his hands to show our friendship but then I cried because I couldn’t control myself. I realize that I loved him but what could I do? Suddenly, he kissed me! He kissed me while I was confused and it was absolutely crazy! How dare he was! Kissing me just add my problems, dear Newt. In brief, he tortured me with his attitudes and words. Then, he continued his effort to convince me that we can be together. He asked me whether I really loved Henry or not and he also told for many times that he loved me. I was feeling guilty to Henry and Newt. Henry not deserved betrayed by me and Newt, I was sorry for being a liar, for lying to you that I loved Henry. Oh… How dare you came and disturbed my engagement? Didn’t you know I always loved you, Newt? I sure he knew for women weren’t very clever at hiding their feelings, and it includes me. Newt, the bound between us was enough to unify us. Then, he kissed me again for I wanted too.

We continued our trip until we arrived in large orchard and Newt asked me to sit down under the shade of an apple tree and he also promised to not touch me. I guessed in my mind what he meant but I still followed what he wanted including to dream of my wonderful. I almost slept while Newt slept first and during that time, I adored him with all my heart. Then, Newt woke up and asked to marry me! I was really happy but I still confused. It was too late darling for someone had had me so I answered ‘No’. Then, I was regret to said that and he walked away quickly, slowly disappear. However, I still hoping in my heart if he stopped, turned and called my name, I would follow him. “God, please made him come back for me,” that was my prayer. Finally, my prayer heard, Newt stopped and called my name. I would not let this chance passed me. I was really sorry to my family and Henry to make you disappointed, I knew this was not good but I couldn’t let my love gone for the second. So, I ran to Newt, I put my arms around him, holding him tightly. I love you Newt. I always love you forever.

Literature in Human Life by EMKPSW

Literature in Human Life

Feelings of eagerness filled my mind as I was listening to my lecturer on our last Prose Class. Moreover, it was related with the topic about literature that I had listened at Salihara Theatre. Consequently, it makes me more stable in my decision to choose literature as my major.

During our last Prose Class, my lecturer explained about what the meaning of literature is and what interpretation is. Actually, I was little bit sleepy during the class because I have got flu. However, I still tried to concentrate at the explanation of my lecturer. Then, I started to ask myself why I chose to understand this hard subject (literature) which is really abstract even when I did not know the advantages of learning it. Somehow, it takes me to the reality where many people can’t respect their lives as grace for they cannot ‘read’ life. Therefore, by learning literature and having interaction with text(s), readers like me can get many advantages such as the values of life for respecting the grace that God has given in my life. In brief, the meaning of literature is as a place where the writer share his (her) ideas about life to the readers who then can relate the text(s) with the real world in their lives.

Furthermore, I remember about my experience when I was visiting Salihara Theater which was really interesting for me during listened to the explanation. The topic of discussion was about ‘Erotic in The Bible’ presented by an expert in theology. Then, what made me interested was the way the expert spoke and presented the lecture. For me, it helps me a lot to recognize literature, in this case, literature in Holy Bible. Besides, she also brought the audience into a comprehension that when reading the works of literature, reader(s) should let the books or texts ‘talk’ to him (her) so the ‘conversation’ between the books (texts) and the reader will happen. Then, in Prose Class, it was also reminded by my lecture. In conclusion, I really enjoyed the seminar because it improved my knowledge about literature and developed my eagerness to learn more and more.

Therefore, both theProse Class and the seminar held in Salihara Theatre have helped me to relate the lesson of literature in my life and filled me with new spirit. In brief, it supplies me the beauty of literature in human life.

Shakespeare's Drama Script written by Ines, Yuii, Francine, Echa, Nursiah and Maria :D

Prepare an “exposition” section in the beginning to give your audience some background knowledge (like in the movies)

The scene is in the story of Two Gentlemen of Verona
(Proteus and Valentine come and talk together)
Proteus : “Hi my best friend Valentine! How are you doing buddy?
(Proteus and Valentine doing high five)
Valentine : “Oh… Proteus… I’m really good. And you?”
Proteus : “I’m pretty well my buddy! Let me tell you something about my beloved lady…”
Valentine : “Oh… (Rolling his eyes) Can you stop talking about her only for a day my friend?”
Proteus : “Come on my buddy! I can’t stop thinking about her... Don’t you know that Julia is so pretty, kind, and polite…
Valentine : “My best friend Proteus, I know that you love her very much but honestly I’m getting tired every time you tell me about your fair lady, Julia.”

(The next day, Valentine meets Proteus to tell the news)
Valentine : (With sad expression) “My dear friend Proteus, I’m so sad to tell you this news…”
Proteus : “What’s wrong my buddy? Don’t make me confused…”
Valentine : “To tell you the truth… We must be separated for awhile because I have to go to Messina…”
Proteus : “Oh please… don’t leave me alone…” (Grabbing Valentine’s arm)
Valentine : “I’m sorry my dear friend… I have to go…”
Proteus : “I’ll be missing you my friend…”

(In other place, there are Lucceta and Julia)
Lucetta : “Excuse me Miss; this is a letter from Proteus. Do you want to read it?” (Winking)
Julia : “How dare you are!” (Taking and tearing the letter) “Now, get lost you!” (With an anger expression)
(Lucetta out)
(Julia put the letter back)
Julia : (With sad expression) “Oh my sweet love, Proteus, how could you write such beautiful words?” (Kissing the several piece of the letter)

(Back to the palace)
The duke : “My son, I order you to accompany your best friend in Messina. I think it is good for you.” (Smiling to his son)
Proteus : “Yes, sir! My will is the same as Valentine’s wish.” (Bowing)

The scene changes to the story of Much Ado about Nothing
(Silvia was reading a book in a bench)
Julia : “Silvia, Have you heard the news that there are gentlemen came to our town?”
Silvia : “Yeah, I have heard that news… Why?” (Straight face)
Julia : “I just tell you.” (Standing beside Julia) “My father invites them to the dinner tonight.”
Silvia : “I don’t care.” (Mumbling)

(At the dinner time)
The duke : “Girls, please come here.” (Whistling these girls)
(Silvia and Julia coming)
The duke : “These are the young gentlemen Valentine and Proteus.”
(Silvia and Julia shaking their hand with Valentine and Proteus)

(At the porch)
The prince : “I really enjoy eating dinner here.”
Valentine : “It’s my pleasure to be here, Majesty.” (Bowing)
The duke : “You’re welcome.” (Laughing)
Silvia : “I wonder that you will still be talking, Signior Valentine; nobody marks you!”
Valentine : “What are you talking about Lady Disdain?” (Ignoring)
Silvia : “Shut up you the prince jester!” (Angrily)
Valentine : “What?! How dare you calling me the prince jester!” (Shocked)
Silvia : “What’s wrong with my mouth? Do you think it is true?” (Smirking)
Valentine : “Watch your mouth!” (Mad)
(Silvia leaving them)
(Then, the prince tells the plan to Proteus about. After hearing the plan Proteus agrees to help the prince to match them. Next, the prince and Claudio began their operations. In brief, Julia also helps them to make Silvia and Valentine)

(At the garden)
Proteus : “Hey, I have news! Silvia told me that she has a crush on Valentine.”
The prince : “Really? I do never think that lady will love any man.” (Laughing) “It sounds great.”
Julia : “It is true because Silvia has told me.”
The prince : “Finally, she has fallen in love with someone.” (Smiling)
(Silvia hears the conversation between them)
(Soon, Silvia opens her heart to Valentine and vice versa.)

The scene changes to the story of a Midsummer Night’s Dream
(When the duke knows that Silvia is in a relationship with Valentine, he disagrees because the duke wants Silvia to marry Proteus. Silvia, who knows about it, decided to escape from her father’s palace to the Valentine’s aunt.)
(There are Silvia and Valentine rest in the forest)
Silvia : (Expressing exhausted) “I’m so tired my dear. Let’s take a rest for a while.”
Valentine : “Well… It is okay my sweetheart. Let’s we take a rest under this shade tree.” (Grabbing Silvia’s arm and sleeping)

(There is a fairy called Puck who has to put love poison in order to make someone fall in love at the first sight. He does it because he is ordered by the King of the fairies, Oberon. The King wants to do it because Oberon sees Julia chasing Proteus.)

(There is Puck watching Silvia and Valentine sleeping)
Puck : (Laughing) “I know… I know… He must be the person that I have to put this potion.” (Coming hither to put the potion in Valentine’s eyelids)
(Suddenly, Julia comes and wakes Valentine up)
Julia : (Rousing) “Valentine… Valentine wakes up! What are you doing here?”
(Valentine opens his eyes and suddenly falls in love with Julia)
Valentine : (Mesmerizing) “Oh Julia… You’re so beautiful. Please be mine. I love you so much my darling.” (Holding Julia’s hand)
Julia : (Surprised) “What??? What did you say? (Ignoring)
(Julia runs leaving Valentine, but he chases her)
(Silvia then wakes up and realizes that Valentine is not beside her)

(That wrong situation makes Oberon order Puck to finish the problem that he has made. Furthermore, Puck puts the love potion into Proteus’ eyelids, so that Proteus would love Julia. He also puts the antidote to Valentine’s eyelids to make him forget his love for Julia)
Proteus : “Julia, I’m sorry if I don’t realize that I love you. Now, please forgive me and be mine.” (Kneeling)
Julia : “Oh finally I can get my love. I will accept your love with no doubt.” (Smiling)
Valentine : (Sad expression) “My beloved Silvia, please forgive me for falling in love with Julia.”
Silvia : “It’s okay Valentine. I love you unconditionally so I forgive you.”
(Then it’s the end of this story. They live happily ever after.)

The Library

Library is the most favorite place in my college life because it has many things that make me enjoy. For example, quiet room and many books. First, the quiet room really helps me for studying, doing my assignments, and also sleeping. Second, a lot of books provided in here push me as a student to enrich my knowledge. Therefore, I am really excited spending my time at library.
First, I can find some rooms which are quite enough to help student like me for studying such as doing my assignments. A side from that, it can be very crowded when lunch time comes. Hence, the quiet room usually used by students for studying, doing assignments and discussing project, but sometimes for sleeping even just for a moment. Therefore, I like it for it has many advantages for me as a student and sometimes, it is more pleasurable than my bedroom.
Furthermore, many kinds of books in library push me as a student to enrich my knowledge because there are many fields of majorI can learn beside English Literature and Linguistics such as, psychology, philosophy, social, medical, technical, etc. So, I can learn a lot of things in this world by reading many books. Thus, I love staying at library.
Therefore, library becomes my favorite pleasurable place in my college life for it is quite enough for searching and reading many kinds of books that will help me as a student to enrich my knowledge.
