The Twelve Tenses of English


ü PRESENT TENSE (main verb)
Pattern:S+V1(s/es)



I study English.
He studies English.
They study English.




ü PAST TENSE (past tense of main verb)
Pattern:S+V2(d/ed)







I studied English.
He studied English.
They studied English.






ü FUTURE TENSE(will or shall + main verb)

Pattern:S+will+V1




I will study English.
He will study English.
They will study English.







ü PRESENT PERFECT TENSE (have or has + past participle of verb)

Pattern:S+have/has+V2(d/ed)




I have studied English.
He has studied English.
They have studied English.

ü PAST PERFECT TENSE(had + past participle of verb)

Pattern:S+had+V2(d/ed)




I had studied English.

ü PRESENT PROGRESSIVE (form of "be" verb + "ing" form of main verb)

Pattern:S+(am/is/are)+Ving




I am studying English.
He is studying English.
They are studying English.






ü PAST PROGRESSIVE TENSE(past tense of form "be" verb + "ing" form of main verb)

Pattern:S+(was/were)+Ving




I was studying English.
He was studying English.
They were studying English.






ü FUTURE PROGRESSIVE (will or shall +be + "ing" form of main verb)

Pattern:S+will+be+Ving




I will be studying English.
