Bless The Broken Road

Tonight, I wanna cry... My past hurts me... I ask myself... Why? why was I so stupid?
I'm so tired of being guilty and blaming myself as sinner.
Lord Jesus, I want to forgive... forgive myself and those who hurt me... as what You taught in Bible...
Lord... I'm thirsty of Your presence...
hungry of Your words...
I miss the time when my life was filled with a passion and desire to be what You want me to be...
But since I fell in sin...
I'm suffering...
Hurts...
Lost...
Lord Jesus, forgive me...
Amen

Bless The Broken Road

I set out on a narrow way, many years ago
Hoping I would find true love, along the broken road

But I got lost a time or two
Wiped my brow and kept pushing through
I couldn't see how every sign, pointed straight to you

Every long lost dream led me to where you are
Others who broke my heart, they were just northern stars
Pointing me on my way, into your loving arms
This much I know is true
That God blessed the broken road
That lead me straight to you

I think about the years I spent, just passing through
I'd like to take the time I lost, and give it back to you

But you just smile and take my hand
You've been there you understand
It's all part of this grander plan, that is coming true

Every long lost dream, led me to where you are
Others who broke my heart, they were just northern stars
Pointing me on my way, into your loving arms
This much I know is true
That God blessed the broken road
That lead me straight to you

Now I'm just rolling home
Into your loving arms
This much I know, is true
That God blessed the broken road
That lead me straight to you
That God blessed the broken road
That lead me straight
To you...

My History of Modern Thought Class 1st assignment

The importance of philosophy in my life starting when I was studying Philosophy of Science in 4th semester, that is like a bridge from my childhood mind to a college student analysis with a process to be more mature. First time I knew about philosophy is when I was about seven years old. This unrealized process started while I was thinking about my birth, asking myself who I am, and imagining where a “Great Maker” creating me is. Moreover, born in Christian family creates me to believe in Jesus as the answer of all questions and receive that sometimes I cannot reach something too far from my mind for human’s mind still have limit, no matter how smart or genius they are. Then, a few years later, I was in Junior High School and found some “interesting” books from three philosophers. Although I do not too remember about their stories, I still memorize their names: Aristotle, Plato, and Socrates. Finally, I become more interested in philosophy after studying in college. Therefore, I really like reading about philosophy, the important part of my life, even though it is hard to understand because it has many wise quotes or crafts that can motivate or enrich my life.
There are some reasons making philosophy becomes important in my life, such as help me to deeply consider about human thinking, to be wiser and careful while facing a problem, see a case in some different perspectives (holistic ways), learn to make a right conclusion and respect my life. Then those things support my faith in Christ even though I have ever heard that some people learning philosophy cannot keep their faith or being “atheist”. It is because she understands that no other philosopher greater than God itself creating His words in the greatest literature book (Bible). Moreover, I also remember a quote from one of the three philosophers, tells “A wise man is the man who knows that he or she does not know.” In my opinion, it means that a real wise and smart man is a person who is humble when he or she becomes smarter for he or she knows that everything meaningless without God.
Furthermore, I, as a student, feel the benefit by learning philosophy in order to improve my consideration about human thinking. For instance, I start to understand and learn some theories, thought or invention from some figures of philosophy such as Kahlil Gibran due to the fact that his creation has some similarities with Christian philosophy (In “The Prophet”). Hence, it is quite difficult to understand with my comprehension; however, I am still interesting in some literary crafts relating with philosophy. In brief, one of philosophy’s effect in my mind is to “push” my eagerness into positive thing (study, study, and study) in a connection in loving wisdom as philosophy’s meaning (philo=love and sophia=wisdom).
After that, the second advantage while learning philosophy is to help me being wiser and more careful while facing a problem. Moreover, in philosophy, I learn to see a case or incident in some different perspectives (holistic ways), so I can (little bit) handle my emotion and try to use other people “shoes” before judging either in mind or words. Understanding other people feeling and emotion helps me a lot to be wiser and thinking thoroughly (holistic) gives me a chance to correct my bad attitudes. In summary, I like philosophy for it motivates me to be better.
The next advantage I get in philosophy is to learn how to make a right conclusion and respect my life. First, to make a right conclusion, I need faith, integrity, principle, and strong desire to choose the best decision. Then, with all I have learnt in philosophy, I believe it will minimize wrong decisions. Second, the (bible) philosophy also brings me into a thought that my life is worth, meant, and precious in God’s eyes, so if I want to have meaningful and successful life, I must “hang” on to Him. In short, it makes me respect my life and I determine to fill it with good and right philosophy bringing me live in God.
Therefore, I realize my life is precious by reading Holy Bible, the greatest philosophy book, making me loves philosophy so much and recognize that philosophy is a part of my life for its advantages helps me a lot to rise, forget my past, and run into His hands.

The Existence of Museum as a Symbol of Unchanging Condition in Salinger’s “The Catcher in the Rye”

Attention : This paper is a part of my final assignment for Prose and Writing Class on 4th semester. So, I've put some sources of the frameworks as the requirements. I've missed some data and I think this paper is (really) far from perfect. Firstly, I didn't know how to start writing, however, I FINISH IT (^_^) ! I'm so happy!

The Existence of Museum as a Symbol of Unchanging Condition in Salinger’s “The Catcher in the Rye”

Introduction

“The best thing, though, in that museum was everything always stayed right here where it was” (p.121) is one of Holden Caulfield’s, the main character in Salinger’s “The Catcher in the Rye”, statement. Have the reader ever thought about one thing in this world that never changed? The writer concerns it since she reads “The Catcher in the Rye”. It also justifies Holden’s, a seventeen years old boy, opinion about rigid situation he wants whereas he is surrounded by phony and moron people including his family and friends and contaminated by those people and circumstances. Then, it is happened while he is starting an odyssey in New York after kicked out from Pencey Preparation School since he does not pass some courses there. Beside that, Holden involved in a quarrel with his roommate, Stradlater, the night before he goes out from the dormitory. Having many experiences with new people and new things, Holden desires to be a catcher in the rye in order to save children from adults’ moronic and fake behavior. In Holden’s opinion, each adult becomes a liar and should not infect children with negative things. Finally, Holden came back to his home after his sister, Phoebe Josephine Caulfield, decides to follow him to go to West and leave her school (p.206). In brief, Holden could not stop the alteration in this world either he likes  or not due to the fact that human’s life affected by many aspects and it is different than museum which saves static things. Thus, the story of “The Catcher in the Rye” contains many symbols from the first chapter until the last; however, the writer just notices some symbols in Museum of Natural History having long description by the author in this novel that Holden explains while he was in New York. Besides, the writer also uses some theories from several sources to support her essay about symbolism in “The Catcher in the Rye”. So, the first thing she does is to find out the existence of the museum itself in the reality and as a result, discovers some information that the Museum of Natural History is a real museum located at 79th Street and Central Park West, New York. Therefore, the writer assumes Salinger uses real museum in his fiction perhaps to make the reader closer to the setting in this story for supporting reader’s comprehension of some signs and symbols he puts. So, are there any things that never changed? The writer does not think so because nothing in this world that never changed except the change itself. In brief, here is the writer’s short analysis about the existence of museum as a symbol of unchanging condition in Salinger’s “The Catcher in the Rye.”

Symbolism in Literature

Furthermore, these are some theories the writer uses to analyze the symbols in this novel, especially the Indian stuff, Columbus, Eskimo guys, big glass cases, the birds and the mummies in Holden’s perspective about unchanging condition which he compares these things with the reality in his life that has changed related with his childhood memories. Thus, each time he visits the museum, it never changes whereas he finds himself has changed for example, being phony and moron, growing older, and trying to find the identity of his life. As a consequence, Holden felt depressed, gloomy and lonely becoming his reason to be the catcher in the rye in order to keep children from world’s bad contaminating. Therefore, most of the theory the writer picks from Robert’s “Writing about Literature - Brief 9th Edition”  but the other she gets from Barnet’s  “A Short Guide to Writing about Literature, 7th Edition”. Besides, she also uses additional source from Ryan’s “Teaching the Novel in Paperback”. In brief, these sources help her a lot to finish this essay. Moreover, these symbols will help the writer to understand the main characer’s mind and Salinger’s ideas about life transformation in situation connected to the passing time, especially in an issue about teenager’s live and the transition to adulthood where at that time, teenager prefer to choose his own life or way and make some wrong decision without a guidance from parents or older acquaintances. In brief, the usage of these theories is to help the writer to bring writer’s ideas from Holden’s statement to the reader understand the meaning of the symbols in museum.
So, the first theory is to determine what is symbolic or not symbolic, the writer should watch or pay attention to meaning’s constancy of an element (Roberts, 1999, p. 117) because symbolism is one of literary modes of increasing meaning (Roberts, 1999, p. 110). According to Oxford Learners Pocket Dictionary, symbol is a sign, mark, and object that represent something (Bull, 2008). Therefore, to realize whether a particular object is a symbol or not she should watch carefully the pointed things that often appear and have significant meaning or support meaning to other element. For instance, the museum has constant meaning due to the fact that it has explained and described on two chapters in this novel (Chapter 16 and 25) which in this case, Salinger made it mainly important to support and increase the meaning of other element in this novel, that is the main character, Holden, statement’s and perspectives about the phony lives (big glasses). In brief, to analyze symbols, the writer should highlight the points that the author emphasizes to increase and support meaning of other element in the story.
Second, a symbol has two elements, the objects and the ideas associated and substituted each other. (Roberts, 1999, p. 115). First, the object is some particular things the author uses with either attractive or implicit ways to build the meanings and the ideas of other element in the story, for instance, a specific object, scene, character, or action. Then, the ideas included values, moral lessons, personality, and ways of life are the things that the author informs to the reader by using symbols. So, not all of the things in the novel is a symbol but some things engaging with the main idea or theme of the story. Consequently, this theory helps the writer to prevent over analyze an object which actually does not engage in the story. In brief, these elements, the objects and the ideas, could not be separated due to the fact that their unity of relationship as a symbol will help her to analyze a story.
Third, according to Ryan, symbols, brought to the writer’s consciousness by the author, is one of literary devices give signals either to human’s mind or emotion, such as ideas, attitudes, and feelings. Last, the complexity of symbols in interpretations and the emotional response. (Ryan, 1963, pp. 56-57). Besides, Barnet also tells that writers of fiction write about things that have happened, seen, or heard and also about thoughts and emotion. Additionally, symbols, located among the real idea containing in a story, give the accuracy in a story. (Barnet, 1996, p. 172) Hence, the writer may know the meaning of the symbols by noticing the signals author uses to describe main character’s behavior. For example, In this case, Salinger used Holden’s statement to make dig reader’s awareness, such as “Nobody,d different. The one thing that would be different would be you. Not that you’d be so much older or anything. It wouldn’t be that, exactly. You’d just be different, that’s all.” By this sentence, the writer can feel Holden’s feelings when he talks to himself, feels depressed and lonesome, finds himself change while actually, he wants to stay same like the museum and its big glasses that never changed. In summary, symbols, as one of literary components, enrich the writer’s thought and soul with writer’s signals about the character he has made.
Fourth, the author helps writer to get ideas about the elements in the story (characters, places, time, and settings) having rich implications by emphasizing them with some ways such as, describing, introducing, or calling attention. (Barnet, 1996, p. 173). First, the example of describing is same as the writer says on the 3rd paragraph about determining what is symbolic or not. In this case, reader can notice from Salinger’s long explanation of an object in some length, such as museum which is described in two chapters. Then, introduce the symbols at times when they might not seem strictly necessary, for example, the mummies’ tombstone. Firstly, she does not notice the meaning of tombstone in this story; however, after she reads Holden’s statement which is said:
“I think, even, if I ever die, and they stick me in a cemetery, and I have a tombstone and all, it’ll say Holden Caulfield on it, and then what year I was born and what year I died, and then right under that it’ll say Fuck You. I’m positive, in fact.”
It seemed not necessary thing but the tombstone of the mummies informs to the writer about Holden’s perspective and imagination of death. The last is calling attention, where the writer perceives -at least slightly- certain characters, places, or situation by calling them repeatedly, for example, Holden said, “It’s killed me” many times from the first chapter and his sister, Phoebe also said word, “killed” to him (Chapter 22, p.166). Although the words “kill” in different meaning, she can understand after reading the whole chapter and the general meaning of death in dictionary because Holden always tells about death which becomes his perspectives of growing old, becoming phony adult, and die. Hence, the general meaning of kill is “to cause someone or something to die, to say that someone will be very angry with someone else, to stop an activity or experience completely, to cause you a lot of pain or effort” (Cambridge Learner Dictionary). Thus, some words that called repeatedly perhaps become a symbol of the story. In summary, describing, introducing, or calling attention are some author’s ways to make a rich implicit symbol.
The fifth theory is symbols have two types, cultural symbols and contextual symbols. First, a cultural symbol refers to general understanding about an object that received in universal. Usually, the writer and the author share the same ideas about historical and cultural traditions. Then, it exemplifies the ideas from both of them (the writer and the reader). For example, in American season, winter is a symbol of death which is related with Holden’s words and imagination about being death by Pneumonia. In addition, Holden’s hat also a cultural symbols because at that age hat is a symbol of uniqueness and individuality. Therefore, the author, the writer and the reader have same idea about winter. Other examples are ordinary, such as  water as a symbol of life and a spouting fountain as a symbol of optimism. On the other hand, contextual symbolic refers to a meaning of symbol that an author creates personally in his craft, for example, the ducks that Holden eager to know where they go in winter. It is a symbol that Salinger’s made by himself for this story as a metaphor of Holden’s life when he had a journey but finally come back to home as the ducks go in winter but after winter come back to lagoon (Chapter 12, p.81) (Roberts, 1999, pp. 116-117).
Therefore, the writer uses those five theories above, there are determining what is symbolic or not symbolic, watching two elements of symbols (the objects and the ideas), searching the signals (human’s mind or emotion, ideas, attitudes, and feelings), paying attention to writer’s ways in describing, introducing, or calling attention to the symbols, and divide the symbols into, cultural symbols and contextual symbols. So, it really helps her to analyze the symbols in “The Catcher in the Rye”

Analysis of Symbolism

After collecting the theories, the writer starts to analyze some symbols in Museum of Natural History taken from chapter 16 and 25 such as, Indian stuff, Columbus, Eskimo guys, big glass cases, the birds and the mummies. These things are symbolic since they have two elements of symbols, emphasizing by the writer, and divided into cultural and contextual symbols. Moreover, all of these objects refer to Holden’s viewpoint about growing up and life’s changing where Holden did not want to be adult because he wished for being a child without infected by phony things but the reality is different to his wish. Thus, it is the irony that creatively symbolized by Salinger by explaining that everything in the museum stay same but the visitors (like Holden) can change, as Holden said, “I mean you’d be different in some way… certain things they should stay the way they are. You ought to be able to stick them in one of those big glass cases and just leave them alone…” In addition, museum also related to Holden’s and Phoebe’s childhood, that is why this place becomes the only place Holden liked (p.119 last line) although some stuffs are spooky and creepy, such as Indian guy in the back of the canoe and Pharaoh’s tomb (pp.120, 203). Therefore, the stuffs in museum also support some ideas about unchanging life from the creative author, Salinger.
Starting with Indian stuff clearly justified by Holden as the first symbol, the writer tries to get the object’s meaning constancy in order to determine whether it is a symbol or not based on the first theory. Then, she finds that it shows Holden’s attention and explanation about the Indian stuff, for instance,” twenty Indians were paddling and standing with paint all over their faces, and they also have a war canoe”. After that, the writer also tries to find the emotion while reading Holden’s experience seeing Indian stuff based on the third theory. In this case she watches Holden’s description about Indian stuff although their spooky; however, still interesting him. For example, the Indian woman also refers as a symbol of sexuality because Holden said that, “… you could see her bosom… we all used to sneak a good look at it… because they were only little kids…” (p.121). Therefore, it shows that Holden is thinking about his innocence when he was a child compared with his eagerness of adultery and sexuality. In addition, Holden explains about the Indian Room where it is a long, long room (p.120). Thus, the writer assumes this as Holden’s journey that seemed takes long time even it just takes three day because there are some precious experiences for Holden’s life and she also feels Holden’s feeling while reading this. In brief, Indian and all of its stuff is a picture of Holden’s journey and eagerness that the writer gets based on the first and the third theory.
Continuing to the second symbol, the writer discovers that Columbus included as a symbol because of the event when Holden escapes from the dormitory (beginning of the story) and come to his parents’ apartment to meet Phoebe, his little sister and borrows some dough from her. This analysis based on the fourth theory which says:
“The author helps writer to get ideas about the elements in the story (characters, places, time, and settings) having rich implications by emphasizing them with some ways such as, describing, introducing, or calling attention. (Barnet, 1996, p. 173)”
So, Salinger emphasizes Columbus’ situation by introducing and describing from Holden’s utterance that Columbus getting Old Ferdinand and Isabella to lend him the dough to buy ships with (p.120). Therefore, it shows about Holden borrowing some money from Phoebe to go where he wants to go (buy ships). Furthermore, the fifth theory is also said about cultural or general meaning and contextual symbol which is the author’s way to represent his meaning. As a consequence, the writer discovers the cultural and contextual meaning in this symbol. Then, the contextual meaning has been explained in the beginning of the paragraph about Columbus’ journey as Holden’s journey in his life because they have a similarity. However, the general or cultural meaning will be explained by the writer. Noticing the word “mutinying” seemed has a cultural meaning in this novel. For example, Holden says the sailors mutinying on Columbus means when Holden, represented by Columbus, wants to go abroad and left his family, he is betrayed by his own conscious when see Phoebe wants to join with him. The writer interprets this after she searches the meaning of mutinying in Cambridge Learners Dictionary which said that mutiny is a verb means to take part in a mutiny. So, the journey of Columbus is representative of Holden’s odyssey even though Holden stated that nobody gave too much of a damn about Columbus (p.120) and has functions as cultural symbol and contextual symbol.
The next symbol is Eskimo guys that is sitting over a hole in icy lake and was fishing through this, as a symbol of the numb and unchanging situation, same as the general interpretations of museum based on the fifth theory about cultural symbol having same meaning between the author and general reader. Holden also states that even he goes there hundred thousand times that Eskimo would still be just finished catching those two fish (p.121). It symbolizes about something freeze that never changed, perhaps the numb of ice statues as social senseless about negative impacts to teenager in age transition from childhood to adulthood like what Holden felt. Besides, it also represents as unchanging situation that Holden expects which cannot be happened that the writer makes this conclusion based on the second theory that a symbol should has an object and an ideas associated and substituted each other. First, the object is the Eskimo guys having related idea about unchanging for the Eskimo guy will never change since they are statues made from ice (frozen means unchanged and no feelings) . Moreover, Holden’s wishes about his past memories of being a child also reflected in the way of his speaking about those Eskimo guys,” Not that you’d be so much older or anything. It wouldn’t be that, exactly. You’d just be different, that’s all…” In summary, the Eskimo guys as a symbolism of a social attention at that age and unchanging situation Holden’s expected.
Furthermore, big glass cases become an important symbol based on the fourth theory about the significance (calling attention) because the stuffs in museum mostly put inside these. There are Indians, Eskimos, Birds, and others which make the museum full of glasses. The writer assumes glass as something that fragile but transparent, so people can see what inside it but cannot touch it. It describes about all the unchanged stuff protected with something that really fragile is a metaphor of Holden’s life that changed because he is not protected with something fragile but he must protect himself. The conclusion is Holden does not afraid of being adult or older but he was afraid of the effect of the change itself which is stated in Holden’s words, “… certain things they should stay the way they are. You ought to be able to stick them in one of those big glass cases and just leave them alone…” (p.122)
After that, the writer notices about the birds in page 121 “…the birds nearest you were all stuffed and hung up on wires, and the ones in back were just painted on the wall, but they all looked like they were really flying south ….” Reading this part, she thinks about why Holden tells about bird after telling about Eskimo guy. Then, she understands that bird is a symbol of liberation and freedom where Holden has felt after he kicked out from Pencey Preparation School, Holden feels free to do what he wants to do, to be a bad boy like all his friends that had religion while he says he is an atheist, and also to search the life’s identity. This conclusion, she takes based on the fifth theory about cultural symbol since bird is widely believed as a symbol of freedom and liberation. Then, Holden finds the goodness in his heart that actually he is not a bad boy, he just does not like school, so he ‘fly’ wherever he wants during three days in New York. As the birds, he thinks that he is really flying to the West; however, he still stays in the place where he must grow up. In brief, birds as a sign of liberation and freedom have a nest, so Holden as a representative of the bird also have a place where he should came back.
The last symbol is mummies which appear at the last part of this story and separated from the other symbols in the Museum of Natural History. It should be a special signs because mummy also known as dead body of Egypt’s Kings buried with special chemical material so that their bodies will not be rotten. The mummies are symbols of death and the vanishing of human’s soul; however, Holden does not feel afraid or peculiar when explaining about this to two young children because what he likes from that ‘pretty spooky’ things (a paradox style of a word) are it is still the same and unchanging even though it has died. So, that is what he wants to be the same, still innocent without any phoniness surrounding him even though he cannot stop the change itself.
Conclusion
Paying attention to the symbols in museum such as Indian stuff, Columbus, Eskimo guys, big glass cases, the birds and the mummies will make the writer as also a reader recognizes Holden’s desire with the help of some theories from several sources. Actually, Holden just wants to be a child for becoming a child is free from phonies and moron things and free to do what he will without infected with terrible factors, for example drink, sex, cigarettes. Furthermore, his fear of growing up cannot help him even just a little because it brings him into irresponsible freedom, like a bird free from nest and does not know where to go. Furthermore, Holden should be guided by his parents but he does not get it from them so he searched by himself. Luckily, his sister, Phoebe, indirectly prevents Holden from his plan to go to West. In brief, the writer assumes this story as a story of a teenager’s fear of growing up, the process of searching the identity in transition time from teenager to adult and his desire of unchanging condition symbolized and represented by the museum and all of its stuff .
Therefore, Holden’s journey along three days in New York, especially in the museum and his statement, “The best thing, though, in that museum was everything always stayed right here where it was” shows the contrast often happened between the human expectation and the reality. Moreover, it presents that nothing in this world that never changed except the change itself. As a conclusion, one of the moral lessons in “The Catcher in the Rye” is to receive the transformation due to the fact that human’s life is totally different with the statues whose existence in the museum having unchanging condition.

Easter Wings

BY GEORGE HERBERT
Lord, who createdst man in wealth and store,
Though foolishly he lost the same,
            Decaying more and more,
                  Till he became
                        Most poore:
                        With thee
                  O let me rise
            As larks, harmoniously,
And sing this day thy victories:
Then shall the fall further the flight in me.

My tender age in sorrow did beginne
And still with sicknesses and shame.
            Thou didst so punish sinne,
                  That I became
                        Most thinne.
                        With thee
                  Let me combine,
            And feel thy victorie:
For, if I imp my wing on thine,
Affliction shall advance the flight in me.

The Present from Jesus in Easter

Analyzing Herbert’s ‘Easter Wings’ telling about Easter, helps me to more realize and understand about   the goodness of Jesus’ resurrection and the unity with Him behind Easter moment that symbolized as wings. It reveals on the many aspects of this poem such as, title, theme, structure, prosody, dramatic situation, diction, imagery and figures of speech, and the tone. Therefore, this beautiful poem reveals the beauty of Jesus’ sacrifice at the cross and His resurrection.
The title in this poem conceives me about what the substance the author will bring to the reader. Though it just has two words, ‘easter’ and ‘wings’, it has an extremely deep meaning. First is easter that means as liberating. As many Christians know, at the Old Testament, easter refers to the freedom of Israel from Egypt while at the New Testament, it refers to the resurrection of Jesus. Therefore, the meaning of easter is about liberation, resurrection, freedom bringing joy and happiness to man from condemnation of sin. Furthermore, it also tells about a new hope and healing. Next is about wings which relate to bird that learn to fly and rise higher. So, the word ‘wings’ used by the author, perhaps to gives clues about man that fall into sin but can arise and fly like a bird with the wings that Lord has given to us because of His love. In conclusion, ‘Easter Wings’ telling about the goodness of Jesus’ resurrection and the unity with Him that set us free, so that we can arise from sin, united and fly with Him.
Then, the theme of this poem is about a man who is united with God’s resurrection as a meaning of Easter itself. As I explain my analysis on the 2nd paragraph before, I interpret this poem as a reflection and a give thanks expression of the author as a human that so loved by his creator. On the first stanza, it tells about man who falls into sin, he lost all the goodness that Jesus has given to him because of his sin. In the deep depression (…the fall further flight in me), he still sing which in my opinion refers to his perspective in general condition.  Whereas, on the 2nd stanzas shows the first perspective as a human which becomes his reflection of his religious experience when he falls into sin and then arise and united with God’s resurrection. Moreover, it has drawn clearly on the title. Therefore, I am so interested in this beautiful and meaningful poem.
Next aspect is the structure of this poem which is divided into three parts, such as lines and stanzas, shape, grammar, and repetition. First, it has two stanzas in this poem which each has ten lines. So, there are twenty lines in this poem. The stanzas and lines make a form like wings if we turn the poem paper to the left or to the right showing the connection with the title and the main idea of this poem. Besides, if I watch carefully, the form also like stairs symbolizing about the situation in human’s life when fall and then rise. However, it still easy to understand though the grammar is old style language such as ‘thou’, ‘thee’, ‘createdst, etc. Last, there are many repetition on this poem that makes it becomes beautiful. For example, at the 3rd line on the first stanza, the word ‘more’ is repeated twice to show that the author more and more weak (… decaying more and more). Besides, there are many words repeated twice, such as ‘most’( line 5 and 15) show the lowest degree of man’s existence (… most poor …most thin), ‘with Thee’(line 6 and 16) show the moment when man united with his Creator, ‘let me’(line 7 and 17) show as a prayer (… with thee O let me rise…with thee let me combine), ‘shall’(line 10 and 20) to emphasize a probability (… shall the fall further… affliction shall advance…)and ‘the flight’( line 10 and 20) as a result of the unity with God’s resurrection. In conclusion, this poem has a unique structure that makes it more interesting.
After that, the prosody in this poem divided into two parts, there are the rhyme and sound effects which makes it beautiful. The rhyme in this poem is various such as, true and end rhyme (store, more, same, became, thee, harmoniously, me, begin, sin, thee, victory, me, combine, thine). Besides, it also has internal rhyme (in, begin, man, and, shall, fall) forming the beauty of ‘Easter-Wings’. Then, the sound of this poem seems like someone who is praying with a slow and calm music which reminds me about the Psalm of King David. In brief, the beauty of this poem also applied by Herbert on the rhyme and sound of this poem.
Moreover, the beauty of this poem also located in the dramatic situation where the speaker prays and seems beg to the Lord to save him from the darkness of his life (… with thee O let me rise, let me combine). Firstly, he praises his Creator (1st stanza), then, he reflects to himself that he really needs God and want to be saved and united by Him, so that he can rise by the wings of God (2nd stanza). Moreover, the wings that he gets from God’s sacrifice as a picture of a bird who needs other birds wings to imp into his injured wings, so that he can fly again. It means, Jesus must die to put His ‘wings’ to us, so we, who was lost because of sin, can ‘fly’ into Heavenly Father’s presence without guilty and condemnation. In short, the dramatic situation of this poem is when the author combines with thee, imp his wing on thine, and advance the flight (2nd stanza).
Furthermore, the diction of this poem is understandable though it uses some English old-style words and many semantic words. For example, for English old style there are thy, thou, thee, thine whereas for semantic words there are tender age, fall further, the flight, imp my wing, let me rise, let me combine, etc. Thus, this poem was written by a old religious author, so it is full with old style and semantic words which make it as a craft of that age.
Then, the figure of speech of this poem using simile to compare human’s fall into sin with the stairs and the resurrection as wings (based on the form of how this poem is written). Besides, the author also compares Jesus’ sacrifice as the killed bird whose wings are given to other bird that still alive. So, like I’ve explained above that this poem full of semantic word and meaning that I can’t understand one by one.
The last is the tone of this poem where the speaker seems in the quiet place is praying alone and singing a psalm for Creator’s goodness while reflecting his live on Easter Day. Then, the speaker realizes how good is his God whose death save him from the darkness and make him arise together with His resurrection. While thinking about this amazing grace, the speaker reflects the depth of the sin he had passed or made him fall. In addition, I guess that the speaker is a man as a picture of Adam, the first man in the Bible, who lost because of his sin and became poor though at the first, he got everything (wealth and store)from God (1st stanza). The reason I guess that because the author of this poem is a man (George Herbert). However, this poem also intend for man in generally including women.  Therefore, the tone of this poem is calm, soft, slow showing the situation in a prayer room, church, or confession room with songs like in the Psalm.
Although many things in this poem still confusing me, I still excited during analyze this poem because the beauty of this poem reminds me about the goodness of Jesus’ sacrifice and resurrection. I also had the same experience with the author or the speaker where I had felt fall too deep into darkness but I still can see His wings lift me up and make me rise. So, it has strengthened me to rise higher than before with His wings. It likes religious experience that I believe will bring new hope into those whose hearts touched by Him to understand the amazing grace behind His resurrection.
Therefore, the aspects in this poem bring me to understand the meaning of Easter as a present from God to His children. The present is ‘the wings’ to help us rise and fly to the presence of Heavenly Father. Besides, it also draws the unity between God and His child. Last, I thank God for reminding me about His love by this poem.

Long Walk to Forever (The Confusion of Catharine’s Heart)

I never thought that I would meet Newt a week before my wedding day. He had been my neighbor since my childhood. Suddenly, he came to my house and knocked the door while I was reading magazine to choose my wedding dress. Therefore, I was shocked and surprised because I knew he joined in the army and he left the camp without permission or usually called ‘A.W.O.L’. So, he really made me worried for he had to get strict sanctions in prison. On the other hand, I felt happy, really happy for actually I loved him but I never showed him or talked about love for he was too shy and as a woman, I couldn’t begin. Actually, we were close friend and maybe too close and I lost him since he joined in the army. Then, Henry Stewart Chasens, my fiancé, came and filled my emptiness during Newt left me. Henry was good enough for me, so that I received the engagement. However, it seemed too long for me, too long for waiting Newt. Unexpectedly, Newt asked me to walk with him but I reject it because as a woman who had been engaged it wasn’t good if people saw me walked with other man except my fiancé or my family. Finally, I couldn’t hard reject his request because I was missing him too as he missed me and I know that I missed the moment where we were together, the comfortable when I was beside him.

Huffst… I felt my heart beat fast during our trip and I could not hinder my feeling, my love, my happiness, and all that he made in my heart at that time. Finally, he confessed to me that he loved me! He also loved me! But… How could I express it? It wasn’t right, I had been engaged! I had a (good) fiancé! Aaaargh… I tried to hinder my feelings from Newt, I shook his hands to show our friendship but then I cried because I couldn’t control myself. I realize that I loved him but what could I do? Suddenly, he kissed me! He kissed me while I was confused and it was absolutely crazy! How dare he was! Kissing me just add my problems, dear Newt. In brief, he tortured me with his attitudes and words. Then, he continued his effort to convince me that we can be together. He asked me whether I really loved Henry or not and he also told for many times that he loved me. I was feeling guilty to Henry and Newt. Henry not deserved betrayed by me and Newt, I was sorry for being a liar, for lying to you that I loved Henry. Oh… How dare you came and disturbed my engagement? Didn’t you know I always loved you, Newt? I sure he knew for women weren’t very clever at hiding their feelings, and it includes me. Newt, the bound between us was enough to unify us. Then, he kissed me again for I wanted too.

We continued our trip until we arrived in large orchard and Newt asked me to sit down under the shade of an apple tree and he also promised to not touch me. I guessed in my mind what he meant but I still followed what he wanted including to dream of my wonderful. I almost slept while Newt slept first and during that time, I adored him with all my heart. Then, Newt woke up and asked to marry me! I was really happy but I still confused. It was too late darling for someone had had me so I answered ‘No’. Then, I was regret to said that and he walked away quickly, slowly disappear. However, I still hoping in my heart if he stopped, turned and called my name, I would follow him. “God, please made him come back for me,” that was my prayer. Finally, my prayer heard, Newt stopped and called my name. I would not let this chance passed me. I was really sorry to my family and Henry to make you disappointed, I knew this was not good but I couldn’t let my love gone for the second. So, I ran to Newt, I put my arms around him, holding him tightly. I love you Newt. I always love you forever.

Literature in Human Life by EMKPSW

Literature in Human Life

Feelings of eagerness filled my mind as I was listening to my lecturer on our last Prose Class. Moreover, it was related with the topic about literature that I had listened at Salihara Theatre. Consequently, it makes me more stable in my decision to choose literature as my major.

During our last Prose Class, my lecturer explained about what the meaning of literature is and what interpretation is. Actually, I was little bit sleepy during the class because I have got flu. However, I still tried to concentrate at the explanation of my lecturer. Then, I started to ask myself why I chose to understand this hard subject (literature) which is really abstract even when I did not know the advantages of learning it. Somehow, it takes me to the reality where many people can’t respect their lives as grace for they cannot ‘read’ life. Therefore, by learning literature and having interaction with text(s), readers like me can get many advantages such as the values of life for respecting the grace that God has given in my life. In brief, the meaning of literature is as a place where the writer share his (her) ideas about life to the readers who then can relate the text(s) with the real world in their lives.

Furthermore, I remember about my experience when I was visiting Salihara Theater which was really interesting for me during listened to the explanation. The topic of discussion was about ‘Erotic in The Bible’ presented by an expert in theology. Then, what made me interested was the way the expert spoke and presented the lecture. For me, it helps me a lot to recognize literature, in this case, literature in Holy Bible. Besides, she also brought the audience into a comprehension that when reading the works of literature, reader(s) should let the books or texts ‘talk’ to him (her) so the ‘conversation’ between the books (texts) and the reader will happen. Then, in Prose Class, it was also reminded by my lecture. In conclusion, I really enjoyed the seminar because it improved my knowledge about literature and developed my eagerness to learn more and more.

Therefore, both theProse Class and the seminar held in Salihara Theatre have helped me to relate the lesson of literature in my life and filled me with new spirit. In brief, it supplies me the beauty of literature in human life.

Shakespeare's Drama Script written by Ines, Yuii, Francine, Echa, Nursiah and Maria :D

Prepare an “exposition” section in the beginning to give your audience some background knowledge (like in the movies)

The scene is in the story of Two Gentlemen of Verona
(Proteus and Valentine come and talk together)
Proteus : “Hi my best friend Valentine! How are you doing buddy?
(Proteus and Valentine doing high five)
Valentine : “Oh… Proteus… I’m really good. And you?”
Proteus : “I’m pretty well my buddy! Let me tell you something about my beloved lady…”
Valentine : “Oh… (Rolling his eyes) Can you stop talking about her only for a day my friend?”
Proteus : “Come on my buddy! I can’t stop thinking about her... Don’t you know that Julia is so pretty, kind, and polite…
Valentine : “My best friend Proteus, I know that you love her very much but honestly I’m getting tired every time you tell me about your fair lady, Julia.”

(The next day, Valentine meets Proteus to tell the news)
Valentine : (With sad expression) “My dear friend Proteus, I’m so sad to tell you this news…”
Proteus : “What’s wrong my buddy? Don’t make me confused…”
Valentine : “To tell you the truth… We must be separated for awhile because I have to go to Messina…”
Proteus : “Oh please… don’t leave me alone…” (Grabbing Valentine’s arm)
Valentine : “I’m sorry my dear friend… I have to go…”
Proteus : “I’ll be missing you my friend…”

(In other place, there are Lucceta and Julia)
Lucetta : “Excuse me Miss; this is a letter from Proteus. Do you want to read it?” (Winking)
Julia : “How dare you are!” (Taking and tearing the letter) “Now, get lost you!” (With an anger expression)
(Lucetta out)
(Julia put the letter back)
Julia : (With sad expression) “Oh my sweet love, Proteus, how could you write such beautiful words?” (Kissing the several piece of the letter)

(Back to the palace)
The duke : “My son, I order you to accompany your best friend in Messina. I think it is good for you.” (Smiling to his son)
Proteus : “Yes, sir! My will is the same as Valentine’s wish.” (Bowing)

The scene changes to the story of Much Ado about Nothing
(Silvia was reading a book in a bench)
Julia : “Silvia, Have you heard the news that there are gentlemen came to our town?”
Silvia : “Yeah, I have heard that news… Why?” (Straight face)
Julia : “I just tell you.” (Standing beside Julia) “My father invites them to the dinner tonight.”
Silvia : “I don’t care.” (Mumbling)

(At the dinner time)
The duke : “Girls, please come here.” (Whistling these girls)
(Silvia and Julia coming)
The duke : “These are the young gentlemen Valentine and Proteus.”
(Silvia and Julia shaking their hand with Valentine and Proteus)

(At the porch)
The prince : “I really enjoy eating dinner here.”
Valentine : “It’s my pleasure to be here, Majesty.” (Bowing)
The duke : “You’re welcome.” (Laughing)
Silvia : “I wonder that you will still be talking, Signior Valentine; nobody marks you!”
Valentine : “What are you talking about Lady Disdain?” (Ignoring)
Silvia : “Shut up you the prince jester!” (Angrily)
Valentine : “What?! How dare you calling me the prince jester!” (Shocked)
Silvia : “What’s wrong with my mouth? Do you think it is true?” (Smirking)
Valentine : “Watch your mouth!” (Mad)
(Silvia leaving them)
(Then, the prince tells the plan to Proteus about. After hearing the plan Proteus agrees to help the prince to match them. Next, the prince and Claudio began their operations. In brief, Julia also helps them to make Silvia and Valentine)

(At the garden)
Proteus : “Hey, I have news! Silvia told me that she has a crush on Valentine.”
The prince : “Really? I do never think that lady will love any man.” (Laughing) “It sounds great.”
Julia : “It is true because Silvia has told me.”
The prince : “Finally, she has fallen in love with someone.” (Smiling)
(Silvia hears the conversation between them)
(Soon, Silvia opens her heart to Valentine and vice versa.)

The scene changes to the story of a Midsummer Night’s Dream
(When the duke knows that Silvia is in a relationship with Valentine, he disagrees because the duke wants Silvia to marry Proteus. Silvia, who knows about it, decided to escape from her father’s palace to the Valentine’s aunt.)
(There are Silvia and Valentine rest in the forest)
Silvia : (Expressing exhausted) “I’m so tired my dear. Let’s take a rest for a while.”
Valentine : “Well… It is okay my sweetheart. Let’s we take a rest under this shade tree.” (Grabbing Silvia’s arm and sleeping)

(There is a fairy called Puck who has to put love poison in order to make someone fall in love at the first sight. He does it because he is ordered by the King of the fairies, Oberon. The King wants to do it because Oberon sees Julia chasing Proteus.)

(There is Puck watching Silvia and Valentine sleeping)
Puck : (Laughing) “I know… I know… He must be the person that I have to put this potion.” (Coming hither to put the potion in Valentine’s eyelids)
(Suddenly, Julia comes and wakes Valentine up)
Julia : (Rousing) “Valentine… Valentine wakes up! What are you doing here?”
(Valentine opens his eyes and suddenly falls in love with Julia)
Valentine : (Mesmerizing) “Oh Julia… You’re so beautiful. Please be mine. I love you so much my darling.” (Holding Julia’s hand)
Julia : (Surprised) “What??? What did you say? (Ignoring)
(Julia runs leaving Valentine, but he chases her)
(Silvia then wakes up and realizes that Valentine is not beside her)

(That wrong situation makes Oberon order Puck to finish the problem that he has made. Furthermore, Puck puts the love potion into Proteus’ eyelids, so that Proteus would love Julia. He also puts the antidote to Valentine’s eyelids to make him forget his love for Julia)
Proteus : “Julia, I’m sorry if I don’t realize that I love you. Now, please forgive me and be mine.” (Kneeling)
Julia : “Oh finally I can get my love. I will accept your love with no doubt.” (Smiling)
Valentine : (Sad expression) “My beloved Silvia, please forgive me for falling in love with Julia.”
Silvia : “It’s okay Valentine. I love you unconditionally so I forgive you.”
(Then it’s the end of this story. They live happily ever after.)
